Duty of Care:
Every dental professional has a responsibility to act promptly if they believe patients’ safety, dignity, or wellbeing may be at risk. Speaking up protects patients, maintains trust, and supports a culture of openness and accountability.
Recognising Risk:
Be alert to signs of unsafe practice, poor standards of care, neglect, or behaviour that may endanger patients. This includes concerns about infection control, record keeping, communication, or a colleague’s conduct, health, or performance.
Taking Action:
If you identify a potential risk, take appropriate steps without delay. Where possible, address the issue directly with the individual involved. If this is not appropriate or does not resolve the concern, escalate it following the practice’s safeguarding or whistleblowing procedures.
Following Policy:
Ensure you are familiar with the Pond Square Dental safeguarding and incident reporting policies. Document your concerns clearly, factually, and confidentially. Never ignore or conceal information that may affect patient safety.
Support and Guidance:
If you are unsure about raising a concern, seek advice from your line manager, practice principal, or regulatory guidance from the GDC. Remember that you are supported in doing the right thing for the patient.
Protection for Whistleblowers:
You will not be treated unfairly for raising genuine concerns in good faith. The law protects dental professionals who report risks appropriately and responsibly.
Promoting a Safe Culture:
Encouraging transparency and accountability benefits everyone. By fostering open communication and mutual respect within the team, we ensure that issues are addressed early, reducing harm and maintaining the highest standards of patient care.
By raising concerns when patients are at risk, dental professionals uphold the trust placed in them, protect patient wellbeing, and contribute to a safe, ethical, and supportive working environment.
