Managing Swallowed Objects

If a patient swallows a crown, core, or similar item during treatment and is not choking, in pain, or showing respiratory distress:

  • You may continue treatment if the patient is comfortable and gives verbal consent.
  • Once treatment is complete, prepare a referral letter to A&E and advise the patient to be reviewed by a specialist.
  • Record the incident fully in the clinical notes.
  • Complete an incident report in the accident book at reception.

If the patient is choking or showing signs of respiratory distress:

  • Stop treatment immediately.
  • Administer appropriate first aid, such as back blows or abdominal thrusts (Heimlich manoeuvre), if trained to do so.
  • Call 999 if the patient is unable to breathe, speak, or cough effectively.
  • Ensure the patient receives urgent medical attention before continuing any dental treatment.

Please notify Kotryna or Juste right away.

GDC Training Principle 7 – Maintain, Develop, and Work Within Your Professional Knowledge and Skills

• Lifelong Learning:

Commit to continuous professional development to keep your knowledge and skills up to date. Stay informed about advances in dentistry, emerging technologies, and best practice guidelines.

• Self-Awareness:

Recognise the limits of your knowledge and skills. Avoid performing procedures or making decisions beyond your competence and seek guidance or supervision when needed.

• Reflective Practice:

Regularly review your own practice and decisions. Reflect on experiences, including successes and mistakes, to identify areas for improvement and reinforce good practice.

• Evidence-Based Practice:

Use current, reliable evidence to inform your clinical decisions. Incorporate research, guidelines, and expert advice to provide safe and effective patient care.

• Professional Development:

Engage in structured training, courses, and learning activities relevant to your role. Record and apply your learning to improve clinical outcomes and service delivery.

• Accountability:

Take responsibility for maintaining your competence and ensuring your skills meet professional standards. Recognise when a case requires referral or support from colleagues with more specialised knowledge.

• Collaboration in Learning:

Share knowledge and skills with colleagues, participate in mentoring or peer review, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within the dental team.

By maintaining and developing professional knowledge and skills, dental professionals ensure high-quality, safe care for patients, remain competent and confident in their practice, and uphold the standards of the profession.
