Oral Surgery in a nutshell

Oral surgery is not just about removing teeth

What is oral surgery? Oral surgery is a specialised area of dentistry concerned with diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the mouth, teeth, gums and jaw.

It includes treatments such as wisdom tooth removal, biopsies, oral cancer assessment, treatment for tongue and lip ties, and procedures for buried teeth or damaged tooth roots. Some problems are straightforward, while others need careful investigation before the most appropriate treatment can be planned.

Treatment Options

Wisdom tooth removal is used when a wisdom tooth is impacted, difficult to clean, or causing pain, infection, swelling, or repeated flare-ups.

Wisdom teeth often become a problem because there is not enough room for them to come through properly. They may remain partly buried, grow at an awkward angle, or affect the surrounding gum and neighbouring tooth. For some patients, treatment can also be planned with sedation in mind, particularly where anxiety or the complexity of the extraction is a concern.

Oral cancer assessment involves examining unusual changes in the mouth, such as ulcers, lumps, red or white patches, or areas that have not healed as expected.

Not every abnormal area is serious, but persistent changes should be assessed properly. Early investigation helps identify the cause and, where necessary, allows further treatment or testing to be arranged without delay.

from £160

An oral biopsy involves removing a small sample of tissue so it can be examined more closely and help determine the nature of an abnormal area.

This is often recommended for persistent lumps, ulcers, patches, or other changes in the mouth that need a clear diagnosis. A biopsy is not simply a treatment step. It is also an important diagnostic tool.

from £400

Treatment for a tongue tie or lip tie involves releasing a tight band of tissue that restricts normal movement.

Depending on the patient and the severity of the restriction, this may affect feeding, speech, comfort, or oral function. Assessment helps determine whether treatment is likely to be beneficial and appropriate.

from £160

Buried teeth are teeth that remain trapped beneath the gum and do not come through in the usual way.

In some cases they need to be surgically exposed or removed, particularly where they are affecting adjacent teeth or forming part of orthodontic treatment planning. The aim is to help manage eruption, position, and long-term oral health.

A hemisection (also known as a tooth hemisection or root resection) is a specialised oral surgery procedure used to treat a damaged or infected molar by removing only the affected root while preserving the healthy part of the tooth.

This treatment can help patients avoid full tooth extraction, maintain their natural tooth structure, and support long-term oral health. A hemisection is often recommended when part of a tooth is beyond repair due to decay, fracture, or gum disease, but the remaining portion is still strong and functional.

A frenectomy is a simple oral surgery procedure used to treat a gap between the front teeth, also known as a diastema. A tight or enlarged frenum (lip tie) can pull the front teeth apart, causing spacing or preventing the gap from closing with braces or Invisalign.

Frenectomy treatment helps support long-term diastema closure, improve smile aesthetics, and reduce the risk of the gap returning after orthodontic treatment. The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and carried out comfortably under local anaesthetic.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth removal involves assessing the tooth’s position clinically, with radiographs and possibly 3D scans. The procedure may be simple, or more complex. A highly complex case may include exposing the tooth, sectioning it for removal, and promoting healing with PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin). Patients receive pain management advice and post-operative care instructions to ensure proper recovery and prevent complications.
